Where do I dispose of Batteries?
All of the three different types of batteries (car batteries, rechargeable batteries, and non-rechargeable batteries) are banned from entering landfills and therefore have to be disposed of separately.

Car batteries:
Acid car batteries can be dropped of at any Enviro-Depot or at the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) depot at the Beech Hill Solid Waste-Resource Management Facility free of charge.

Rechargeable batteries:
Select retail outlets including; Bell Mobility, Canadian Tire, Future Shop, Home Depot, London Drugs, Motorola Cellular dealers, Revy, Telus Mobility, and the Source by Circuit City will accept rechargeable batteries for recycling. Check out www.rbrc.com or call 1-800-822-8837 for more information.

Non-rechargeable batteries:
Regular household batteries including alkaline/lithium batteries (D, C, AA, AAA, 9-volt, 12-volt, etc.) as well as button type batteries (watch, hearing aid batteries, etc.) can be dropped off at the municipal office located on Beech Hill Road or at the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) depot at the Beech Hill Solid Waste-Resource Management Facility free of charge.

Where do I dispose of used oil?
If you change the oil in your own automotive or recreational vehicles you can return your used oil to facilities throughout the region. Under the Program, businesses that sell oil are required to either accept used oil, or must arrange with another nearby facility to take back used oil. There is no charge for this program. Products covered in this program are engine oil, hydraulic fluid, lubricating oil (engines, turbines, gears), and transmission fluid.

Safety Tips for Dealing with Household Hazardous Materials:

  • Keep containers upright, tightly closed, with labels intact.
  • Never mix substances or pour into other containers
  • Avoid burning or reusing empty containers.
  • Keep unused portions and empty containers (check labels to see if an empty container can be triple rinsed and safely discarded in household garbage)
  • Keep out of reach of children, pets or wildlife.
